Most of the current drivers that ship with Prism II based wireless lan cards have problems running with Windows XP. Compaq have issued a softpaq update for the WL100 that causes a blue screen of death to occur. Similarly, Dlink and Sitecom also have drivers which dont function correctly under XP.
I have found a solution to this after many hours of head-scratching.
First, Install your lan card hardware in XP. Add the correct driver, even if this causes a question mark to appear in device manager. Next go to www.magiclan.com and download their driver with the file name "magiclan_v367". After downloading, install the Samsung magic lan utility. Restart your PC.
On reboot, sign in, go to the device manager, and find the wireless card with the question mark by it. Select this, do an upgrade driver. Select that you will find the location of the driver and not to search for it. Point it at the manufacturer of Samsung, and device type of "SAMSUNG 11Mbps WLAN PC Card(3v)" for a pcmcia card.
This will then install the device drivers for the samsung based Prism II chipset card.
Restart your PC once more, after you have signed in, you should find a new icon in the system tray. When you double click this icon, a GUI with the current status should appear.
The photo's below show some screen shots of the Samsung driver in use with a Compaq WL100 card.
As can be seen from the pictures, the Samsung driver is not just the Intersil driver, with specific tweaks, but a rewritten one, with some nice features. Of particular interest is the Site Survey which allows access points to be located. A nice graphical signal indicator is also provided which operates in real time and is useful for peaking antenna's etc.
Compaq have also shipped an XP driver for PrismII cards which seems to work well. The compaq document can be found at http://www.compaq.com/support/files/networking/wlan/WL100XP.html
The softpaq with the driver in it can be found below. (SP21265.EXE)
